Abstract

The large quantities of palm oil industry wastes produced are Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) and palm kernel shell. The palm kernel shell is the palm oil industry waste which is reach 60% of palm oil production. POME contains 0.6-0.7%w/w oil and grease which has to be treated efficiently before it may be discharged. The oil in POME is a dangerous pollutant for the aquatic environment because it is toxic to microorganisms that live in the water. Oil in POME can be reduced through adsorption process using palm kernel shell which is the solid waste of palm oil industry itself as bioadsorbent. The method introduced in this study is the pretreatment of the bioadsorbent using green solvent, NH4OH solution with concentrations of 1, 1,5, and 2,5 M. In the adsorption process, 100 mL of 6000 ppm oil solution was added whereas the dosages of adsorbent varied as follow 2, 3, and 4 gram. The adsorption process was done in the batch system, room temperature, 40 minutes contact time, and 200 rpm speed of stirring. The analysis including the yield of oil adsorbed on adsorbent and moisture content. The results showed that the pretreatment with NH4OH solution has decreased oil content in POME up to 66.7%w/w.
