Abstract

This research investigated the adsorption performance of activated carbon (AC) to adsorb two anionic dyes, Tartrazine and Allura Red AC, from synthetic wastewater in single and binary systems. The effects of initial dye concentration (30-70ppm) and pH (2-10) on dye removal were investigated at ambient temperature. The kinetic models (pseudo first order, pseudo second order and interparticle diffusion) and isotherm models (Langmuir, Extended Langmuir, Modified Extended Langmuir, P-factor and interaction factor) of dyes adsorption were studied. Adsorption kinetic of dyes was studied in single and binary systems and rate sorption was found to follow pseudo — second order kinetic model except for Tartrazine at pH above 8 (single systems) was found to follow interparticle diffusion. The isotherm data of dyes in single systems followed Langmuir isotherm while binary systems followed Modified Langmuir Isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity (single system) of Tartrazine was in the range between 0.04196 mg/mg to 0.095988 mg/mg and Allura Red AC was in range of 0.095988 mg/mg to 0.804117 mg/mg. The maximum adsorption capacity (binary system) of Tartrazine was in the range between 0.03743 mg/mg to 0,0993 mg/mg and the maximum capacity of Allura Red AC was in the range between 0.0553 mg/mg to 0.122769 mg/mg.
