Abstract

Ngestirejo Village is one of the seaweed-producing areas in the Gunung Kidul region of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province. Due to limitations in science and technology, the local community has only been able to sell raw seaweed at low prices. Seaweed is a valuable natural resource that contains various bioactive compounds, such as fucoidan, carrageenan, and fucoxanthin. These compounds, particularly fucoidan, have significant benefits, including antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. The high antioxidant content of seaweed makes it suitable for processing into biocosmetics, as it can protect against UV exposure, boost collagen production, prevent premature aging, and repair cell damage. In 2021, Ngestirejo Village successfully obtained special funds from the DIY provincial government to develop local seaweed into high-value products such as biocosmetics. To produce these biocosmetics, the Ngestirejo Village Government established the Jala Arta Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) with assistance from the Chemical Engineering Department of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta. One of the biocosmetic products derived from seaweed is lipstick. The lipstick produced is of comparable quality to various commercial brands available on the market. Based on a survey of 39 respondents, 84,6% indicated that the seaweed lipstick was of better quality than the lipstick they typically use. This seaweed lipstick offers the advantages of being safe to use, having attractive colors, causing no side effects, and having a relatively long shelf life.
