Screening for Plagiarism
Screening for Plagiarism
The Indonesian Journal of Communication Studies (IJCS)
Policy
IJCS is committed to maintaining academic integrity. All submissions are screened for originality using Turnitin. We evaluate similarity reports case-by-case, considering the nature of overlap (e.g., references, standard methods, boilerplate statements) and whether proper citation and quotation are provided.
Tools
- Primary checker: Turnitin similarity screening
- Cross-checks: Reference and metadata verification (e.g., Crossref data)
Screening process
- Initial check: All new submissions are scanned with Turnitin before peer review.
- Editorial assessment: The Editorial Board reviews the report, focusing on the type and location of overlaps.
- Author notification: If issues are detected, authors receive the summary and are asked to revise.
- Re-screening: Revised manuscripts may be re-checked to confirm compliance.
- Decision: Manuscripts with unethical or unaddressed overlaps may be rejected.
What counts as acceptable overlap
- References and bibliography: Similarity from the reference list is generally acceptable.
- Standardized methods and common phrases: Conventional descriptions may show overlap when properly cited.
- Quoted material: Direct quotes must be enclosed in quotation marks and accompanied by citations.
Unacceptable practices
- Verbatim copying without quotation/citation
- Paraphrasing that closely mirrors source structure or wording without acknowledgment
- Self-plagiarism (reusing substantial parts of one’s own published or submitted work without disclosure)
- Patchwriting that reproduces the source meaning and sequence with superficial changes
Author responsibilities
- Ensure originality: Submit only original work and cite all sources appropriately.
- Use reference managers: Maintain accurate citations and consistent style.
- Self-check (optional): Authors may run their own similarity checks before submission to reduce avoidable overlap.
Editorial actions
- Minor overlap: Request for clarification or revision.
- Significant overlap: Revisions required or rejection.
- Misconduct: Rejection and potential notification to the author’s institution or funder where appropriate.
