A proposed socio-technical demand–resource equilibrium model for burnout mitigation

Research on burnout mitigation is expanding rapidly. However, the evidence remains fragmented and is often confined to healthcare or education-specific contexts. To improve transferability across broader work systems, this study conceptualizes burnout mitigation as a socio-technical and ergonomic problem. A structured narrative review combined with exploratory bibliometric analysis was conducted using Scopus-indexed literature. Literature identification and selection adopted PRISMA-informed screening procedures. After screening and eligibility assessment, 13 studies were included in the final review corpus. Bibliometric mapping was performed using VOSviewer (v1.6.20) to explore thematic relationships and keyword co-occurrence patterns. The exploratory bibliometric mapping identified thematic concentrations around individual recovery and resilience, peer and community support, technology-mediated work redesign, and organizational or macroergonomic interventions. The findings indicate a gradual shift from prevalence-oriented burnout research toward mitigation-focused and prevention-oriented approaches. The study proposes the Socio-Technical Demand–Resource Equilibrium Model (SoTDREM) as a conceptual framework for burnout mitigation, advancing macroergonomic theory by positioning burnout mitigation as systemic design optimization rather than individual resilience enhancement. The framework offers a preliminary conceptual structure that can inform future ergonomic assessment and empirical validation of burnout mitigation strategies across sectors.
